Bone Basics & Skull ID with Dr. Wendy Hood
Tuesday, July 28 at 5 pm Pacific (8 pm Eastern)
This presentation will go over bone and skull ID basics, addressing questions such as: Does this bone belong to a fish, herp, bird, or mammal? What traits are valuable for narrowing down skull IDs to family? And how do you avoid getting overwhelmed by the huge diversity of traits given for each skull in Mark Elbroch’s book, Animal Skulls?
Bio: Dr. Wendy Hood is a Professor of Biological Sciences and Curator of Mammals at Auburn University. Her research is in evolutionary physiology, emphasizing mitochondrial adaptations in diverse species. She taught undergraduate courses in Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy for many years and now teaches Mammalogy. Both courses have a substantial emphasis on taxonomic variation in skull and body morphology. She is a Level III tracker.

Becoming a competent tracker of anything requires thinking at multiple scales about the species you’re hoping to better understand. This presentation focuses more on macro themes (e.g. avian ecology, migration & evolution) than it does on micro topics (e.g. foot morphology, species specific feeding behavior).
